When the only realistic way to get a book published was to work with a traditional publishing house, a writer’s path forward was clear. Traditional Publishers are the companies everyone knows such as Penguin Random House and HarperCollins. Whether large or small, global, or hyper-local, traditional publishers operate the same way. They produce professionally edited and designed books. They cover all production costs and pay authors royalties based on copies sold. Traditional publishers are notoriously selective.
Self-Publishing, also known as Independent Publishing, is an option available to everyone, although it’s not as easy or inexpensive as some would have you believe. Much depends on your familiarity and comfort with basic technology. For some authors, the technical side of self-publishing is a breeze. For others, it’s an enormous obstacle.
